Communications

Use this reference for demand letters, settlement offers, meet-and-confer emails, co-parent messages, lawyer letters, and record-preserving communications.

Structure

A communication should be calm, direct, and quotable. The reader may be opposing counsel today and the court later. Lead with the ask, deadline, and consequence where appropriate.

Common shells

• Demand letter: asks for payment, performance, cure, or cessation by a specific deadline.
• Meet-and-confer email: narrows issues and documents good-faith effort before filing.
• Settlement offer: states terms clearly and avoids unnecessary admissions.
• Co-parent communication: preserves record while avoiding provocation and child-involving language.

Drafting checks

• Use exact dates and deadlines.
• Avoid threats beyond the actual next procedural step.
• Avoid insults, diagnoses, and motive claims.
• Make the ask concrete and capable of compliance.
• Preserve the record without sounding performative.
