Orders

Use this reference for proposed orders, consent orders, agreed orders, parenting orders, support orders, discovery orders, and enforcement orders.

Structure

An order should be command language the judge can sign. Avoid argument, background advocacy, and excessive explanation. Use clear ordered paragraphs with dates, deadlines, responsible parties, and cure conditions.

Common shells

• Proposed order: paired with a motion; states what the moving party asks the court to enter.
• Consent order: reflects agreement; use neutral command language and signature/endorsement blocks.
• Parenting order: defines schedule, exchanges, decision-making, travel notice, communications, and dispute-resolution terms.
• Enforcement order: identifies violated duty, purge conditions, deadlines, possible sanctions, and future compliance terms.

Drafting checks

• Every obligation has who, what, when, and how.
• Avoid findings that are not necessary to the relief.
• Use measurable deadlines instead of vague phrases.
• Do not include legal argument in the order body.
• Signature and endorsement blocks match the court context.
